Big Chill News
10th August 2009
We had a fantastic time at the 2009 Big Chill, with a bigger & better scruff tea shop (complete with FAT sound system & freshly baked cakes by our wonderchef Reno), in a lovely location by one of the lakes. This year we celebrated the launch of two new teas. The first is the 'Big Chill' tea, with Rooibos, Cinnamon & Pear, and the second is 'Look Lively!' with Lemongrass, Yerba Maté & Mint. Massive thanks to all the tea shop staff, supervisors, sound crew, big chill regulars & the weather for all being so lovely!
Your tea drinking raised £1000 for the Karmi Farm Clinic.
Karmi Farm supports the local community in a remote region of the Himalayan foothills near Darjeeling. The money will provide continued support for the Karmi clinic and it's local community. Based on Karmi Farm located in N E India in the foothills of the Himalaya on the Sikkim border, the clinic caters for all the local subsistent farmers. The nearest hospital is a 3-4 hour walk away and in most cases has little in the way of medical supplies or, sometimes, even medical staff.
Karmi Farm Clinic is run as a first stop clinic for these people. It frequently has to deal with accidents such as deep machete cuts, dead fall injuries, and other accidents relating to living off the land. In addition to accidents the clinic deals with everyday problems such as scabies, diarrhoea, conjunctivitis and other infections associated with basic living conditions and water shortages.

Crate Digging on radio 4
31st March 2009
Archive on 4 – Beat Mining With The Vinyl Hoover
Saturday 28 March
8.00-9.00pm BBC RADIO 4
How record collectors changed the way we listen to and make music.
In this week's Archive on 4, Toby Amies delves into the archives to discover the value and significance of old vinyl. He discovers a network of dealers and buyers, and a world in which a record bought for a few pence at a car boot sale can provide the basis for a best-selling hit.
The appearance of vinyl as a format coincided with a golden age of popular music. For more than 30 years, bits of these old records have been finding their way into new ones, as samples or, more recently, as reissues and lucrative back catalogue. Finding and using old vinyl has often been controversial and has given rise to million-dollar lawsuits. Toby attempts to find out how vinyl's past has shaped and influenced what people are listening to today. Despite newer digital file formats and a global catalogue online, vinyl continues to increase in value. And, as he explores what makes vinyl so valuable, he gets lost in music along the way.
Among the community of record collectors known as "crate diggers" and "beat miners", Toby meets Manchester DJ Mr Scruff. A chance encounter with a couple of records in a charity shop, led him to create his biggest-selling hit to date.
Toby soon realises he is collecting record collectors, getting dusty fingered as he digs out the world's most committed vinyl maniacs with contributions from: DJ Mr Scruff; 45 King; Bob Stanley; Steve Stein (aka Steinski); Aaron Fuchs (Tuff City Records); Coldcut; Pete Waterman; DJ and compilation compiler Keb Darge; funky drummer Idris Muhammad; and B George, the director of the ARChive of Contemporary Music.

T'Internet Love For 'Ninja Tuna'
3rd November 2008
Over at Scruff HQ, we're pretty damn chuffed that you lot are enjoying 'Ninja Tuna'.
From nice words overheard at the tea stand at the recent gigs to some lovely postings from internet folk, here's just a few of the people we would now quite happily hug in the street if we saw them...

"The Scruffster has done it again. He's back with a new album. It seems to be out on his own label, a subsidiary of Ninja Tune, called Ninja Tuna! Ah, Mr Scruff, you old japester." Read more here
Re:Up
"On this record I used more synths than previous ones, as opposed to working so much with samples... The fun part is just trying to do things in an unusual manner. Like micing up percussion in the storage shed. Daft little things like using some old crusty keyboard, or throwing things at the keys instead of playing it with your hands." Read more here
Rock The Dub
"...to now hear that his Ninja Tuna album (which features Danny Breaks and Roots Manuva) is out, I'm mad that I had no idea dude was working on new material. In any case, here's a mixtape I just spotted. Dude is a dope DJ, so don't sleep at ALL..." Read more here

New Mr Scruff & Jazzanova Southport Mix CD
17th July 2008
After a really enjoyable gig at Southport Weekender back in May, I am very excited to announce that myself & Jazzanova have collaborated on the latest Southport Double Mix CD! It is rare that I stick to one type of music for a mix CD or a DJ set, but I have been inspired by so much soul music over the last 25 years that it was a real pleasure to dig into the archive & pull out some of the amazing soul music that has inspired me so much. This mix is my tribute to Southport.
In contrast, Jazzanova serve up a divine deep house & disco platter that represents another side to the event.

JANUARY SNAIL!
8th January 2008
Well, it’s that time of year when the shops are full of people fighting over the latest January Sale bargains, coming away with maybe some cheap socks (if you’re lucky) and bruised ribs (if you’re not). Most of the T Shirts are now £10, ladies aprons are now half price, and you can get all 3 mug designs as a bundle for £10. Eek!

30th July 2007
I am sat in a portakabin on the new womad site in wiltshire, after a fantastic festival. The site was quite muddy, and a couple of tents had to be closed, but the atmosphere & music completely eclipsed any bad weather. My personal highlight was Bassekou Kouyate from Mali, who gave two incredible spellbinding performances. I really enjoyed my set on sunday night too, so much energy & good atmosphere, plus it was great to have so many kids dancing & getting into the music! The tea tent went really well, and the new teas are going down a treat. We are now on our way to the Big Chill to do it all again!

1st April 2007
Time for a quick summary of the first quarter of 2007..about three quarters of the way through my next album now, and I have been getting very positive results from road testing new tracks out at my gigs. Tour wise, I had some lovely gigs in America, Australia & New Zealand in February & March, and a great set of UK dates in April & May, including a fantastic first gig at our new london venue, KoKo.In the meantime, I have finished a collaboration with Andreas Saag, under his 'Swell Sessions' guise. called 'No No', which is featured on his forthcoming lp, released in september on freerange records. The track is available now on a 4 track vinyl sampler for the LP, called 'Swell Communications sampler part 1'. More info at www.freerangerecords.co.uk.
I have also recently done a remix of Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators ' If this ain't love' which should see the light of day soon, on ATC records.
We are also working on improving the website, plus starting a fan club type thing, more news about both these things to come..
What's Happening?
7th November 2006
What's Happening?Hello there! been a bit slack on the news front, so here's a brief recap from the last few months or so..
I have been firmly holed up in the studio creating my next album, over half way through now! I am road testing the tracks at my gigs to good response.
My 'Big Chill Classics' compilation was released in mid september. It was a chance for me to delve into the shelves & pull out a variety of my favourite mellow nuggets. Loads of soul, reggae, jazz, latin & other goodness, without a single whale noise in sight!
At the moment i am planning for a November UK tour, and a few scottish dates in December, as well as getting into the studio on my days at home.
This new years eve, i decided to have a low-key local gig for a change, and am playing a Keep It Unreal speacial at the Music Box.
That's about it for now..toodle pip!

Blakai featuring Bembe Segue - Afrospace (Schtum 12”)
While we wait for the Bembe Segue LP, she gets busy with Mark Force, under his Blakai guise, for this monstrous piece of broken beat mayhem. Bembes vocals are underpinned by a heavy, lively, rolling groove, creating a very individual and effective club tune.
New Cool Collective - Perry (Freestyle 12")
Freestyle records can be a bit hit & miss, but they hit the jackpot with this wonderful slab of dancefloor jazz fusion. One of the biggest tunes at last months Etch & Keep it Unreal nights , and sure to make a re-appearance this weekend.
Various Artists - Soul Gospel (Soul Jazz Records dblLP/CD)
This astounding compilation is one of my favourite Soul Jazz releases so far, a varied collection of gospel-tinged soul music. Personal highlights include Clarence Smiths take on Motherless Child, Bobby Blands 1966 gem Lets get together, Jessy Dixons sublime modern soul masterpiece Love lifted me & Sons of Truths heavy social commentary I dont know where were headed. This album shows brilliantly how gospel has shaped the whole spectrum of soul music.
The Rebirth - This Journey In (Kajmere CD)
After delivering what was possibly the finest soul tune of 2004, This Journey In, the Rebirth return with a full-length album that does not disappoint! Influenced by the likes of Earth, Wind & Fire, Don Blackman, Weldon Irvine, Rotary Connection, Roy Ayers & Pleasure, this LA septet do us proud with 11 pieces of soul magic. In addition to the classic title track & the second single Everybody Say Yeah/Got Your Madness, I am playing the mellow Common Ends and the wriggly hypnotic Shake It. Thumbs up all round!
Nostalgia 77 - The Garden (tru thoughts LP/CD)
Ben Lamdins second LP is a lot perkier than his debut Songs For My Funeral. A heavy combination of hip hop/jazz/funk/latin/afro vibes that blew me away on the first listen! A combination of programming & live instrumentation gives the whole album a very natural feel. A must for fans of the Cinematic Orchestra, or people who like their Jazz & Funk HEAVY! Also includes the fantastic cover version of the White Stripes Seven Nation army featuring Alice Russell on vocals.
